Hi guys, great idea for a podcast. I'd like to suggest two things for your future work:
1. Would it be possible to play some snippets of the actual song for reference in the podcast, whenever you refer to certain parts?
2. Please add a user forum so the listeners can join the discussion and contribute their thoughts on what makes hit songs tick.
3. To my knowledge there is some scientific research going on on what makes certain kinds of melodies/music appealing, maybe you could fit in some more theoretical points of view and how they apply to the songs you discuss.

We've experimented with putting the music in the podcast. The problem is licensing, of course. I've done some careful research on this and provided we did no advertising, we could probably claim fair use. We did try it one episode, though.
User forum is a great idea and is very doable. I'll see what I can do.
I'm not aware of the scientific research on melodies and why they are appealing. Can you send me a link?
The research I'm reffering to takes place mostly in the field of music psychology. Here are some ressources:
